SAGIWith the upcoming release of BODY BEAST, it will be interesting to see the nutrition part of the program, but my take is there will be some basic supplements that will be required as part of this program. It’s not easy to gain MASS, as in Muscle. This program talks about gaining 10 lbs of muscle in 90 days.

This is the first time I will be experimenting with a MASS GAINING routine after having done P90X, P90X2, Insanity, Asylum, P90X+ and Tony Horton One on One’s. But the fundamentals for any muscle growth stays the same. Intensity (reps between 6-8), Nutrition and Recovery.Let’s talk about Supplements, that forms a subset of ‘Nutrition’.

Without much ado, here’s my take on the supplements that will be a part of this program.

Protein Supplements:

Protein and Amino Acids are much essential to building muscle. I take the Bluebonnet Whey Protein, Jay Robb Whey Protein and the SunWarrior Vegan Protein; these brands have no added artificial sweeteners, preservatives or sugars. Highly recommended, you can check out Amazon or your local store for these brands.

BCAAs

BCAA stands for Branched Chain Amino Acids. Amino Acids are the building blocks of muscle. This will definitely be a part of any mass gaining routine. Amino Acids are found in foods with protein, such as meat, eggs, fish and grains such as quinoa.

Post-Workout Recovery Drink:

There are many recovery drinks in the market these days. The idea behind a recovery drink is …um …… well, to recover! The ideal carb:protein ratio is 4:1 and I prefer something that has about 200 calories. The P90X Recovery Drink has the same ratio with fast acting carbs and protein to be delivered to the muscles for quick recovery. There is a window of opportunity post workout that is anywhere between immediately after workout and the next 45 min to an hour that the recovery drink must be taken for appropriate benefits. At any other time, this drink will just become a high carb drink and not provide the benefits you’re supposed to experience. This is all about nutrient timing.

Pre-Workout Drink:

Speaking of nutrient timing, a pre-workout will help you with your early morning workouts. Some prefer the Beachbody Pre-Workout, some prefer a cup of coffee. Whatever it is that you decide, make sure to stay away from chemicals and keep it long term and natural. Fast acting carbs such as Banana or Dates with some Protein added will also make a simple pre-workout. Or you could choose to add some greens or 1/2 Scoop of Shakeology to give you the extra boost in energy using natural sources.

Shakeology:

Shakeology makes it convenient to get 70+ SuperFood ingredients all in one place and save a ton of money looking to buy them separately. This is definitely a MUST HAVE on your list. It’s not just a supplement, it’s a complete system! The synergy of foods and the vitamin sources in Shakeology give you so many benefits from digestion, to revving up the metabolism, protein, prebiotics, probiotics and much much more!

Multi-Vitamins:

Normally, with the intake of Shakeology, your basic Vitamins and Minerals are taken care of. But for a MASS GAINING routine, the requirements are higher since there is a caloric surplus. You will need more to recover, and muscle growth takes place when there is a caloric surplus, meaning you’re eating more than you’re expending. I would recommend going with something that is derived from natural food sources instead of the synthetic Muti-Vitamins.

Omega-3s:

Fish Oils or Healthy Fats (aka Essential Fats) will definitely be a MUST HAVE in this program. Get some Fish Oils from Costco or your local grocery store.

Protein Bars:

These make for a great snack. I really like the Quest Protein Bars (All Natural Line) and Rise Protein Bars. No artificial sweeteners, no sugars and no sugar alcohols.

Creatine:

This one will definitely be there, but honestly speaking, I don’t take creatine, but this is up to you.

The idea is to gain muscle mass, which means you will be eating a lot of carbohydrates, I would recommend though to keep these carbs complex, such as brown rice, quinoa, etc. Even if you’re trying to gain mass, you have to eat super-clean to make sure the weight you’re gaining is muscle and not fat. Keep a track of your body fat percentage and keep weighing yourself every 30 days to calculate how much muscle you’re gained.

** Here’s a quick update from Beachbody

“A new line of supplements will be released with the launch of Body Beast – the “Beachbody Extreme Nutrition” supplements. They have been specifically designed for mass building programs like Body Beast, but can also be used with any Beachbody program where muscle building is the goal, especially P90X®, Insanity®, Les Mills Pump and ChaLEAN Extreme®. Expect some top-shelf ingredients! More info to come. Stay tuned!”
