I blogged on my favorite protein bars few years back and it was hard at that point to find a good protein bar because most products out there had a ton of artificial ingredients. But things have changed over the last 5-6 years. Just like technology, the food/nutrition industry also has evolved a lot. So here’s my top 5 recommendations on protein bars.

1) Quest Protein Bars

Quest was originally the bars that started using high fiber in their bars (which means the carbohydrate source was mainly fiber) and these bars could be used for the cutting phase. The calories listed on the nutrition label are misleading though. They do not count calories coming from fiber. Regardless, these are good bars. Make sure to select flavors that do not have sucralose as an ingredient. Look for stevia instead.

Cost: $2 per bar

Protein: 20 grams

Calories: 160 (per label) but in reality it’s approx 200-220.

2) No Cow Bars

Very similar profile as the Quest Bars and also Vegan. In fact the profile is so similar to Quest, it does seem like the makers of this bar are in fact inspired by the popularity of Quest.

Cost: $2.50 per bar

Protein: 20 grams

Calories: 200

3) Rx Bars

These bars have kept it very simple, with mainly 3 ingredients it’s hard to beat the simplicity, no junk approach and taste with the Rx Bars. They also have Rx kids bars. Or you could just cut the regular bar into half and have your kids eat it. C’mon!

These are sweetened with dates so these make a great post workout snack rather than a regular snack. Keep in mind the sugar source is fruit but you still have to keep macros in mind.

Cost: $2 per bar

Protein: 12 grams

Calories: 210

4) Pegan Protein Bars

Again, very similar profile as the Quest Bars. See a trend here? I have not been a fan of their taste but they have clean non junk approach.

Cost: $ 2.50 per bar

Protein: 20 grams

Calories: 190

5) Organic Food Bar

These are perhaps the best natural tasting bars in the market. Most ingredients in this bar are organic. Great bars and great value for money. Since these are relatively higher in calories, you need to be a serious athlete to earn these calories. For a sedentary lifestyle, these bars could easily add weight to your body so be careful and make sure you earn these calories. I know I said it again because it’s important.

Cost: $3 per bar

Protein: 22 grams

Calories: 330

This is by no means a comprehensive list, and there are quite a few better bars out there. Although natural food is the best for snacking or meals, but with most people having a busy hectic lifestyles protein bars are a much better choice than getting that pop-tart from a vending machine. Actually, pop-tarts are pathetic.
